These are some of the collages that we did in the Friday transfer class. The skeleton was done by Kim. I love its simplicity and stark colors. I think it is perfect as is.  That was done with a contact paper transfer. The heart collage was done by Kari. It says "gratitude is the hearts memory". There is a map under the transfer, also a contact paper transfer. Very cool. The last one was done by me- of course it has a birdie in it!  The little bird in the upper right corner was a transparency transfer on glass, and the larger bird is  transparency transfer on vintage fabric. Then wax was applied.  Stop in to the Zinnia blog to see all the pics. O.k. that's it, it is so beautiful today I gotta go play outside!

art journaling...

I did it. I've been thinking about it for years, and talking about it, but I finally just picked up a damn book and started. I  used an old text book I got at a thrift store. I picked it out because I liked the size.I  I love to find new uses for old things so this really works for me. I realized that I had not begun this process sooner because I didn't have a journal, and I felt that I "should" make one, and I don't really like to make books so that stopped me. I used to keep a giant sketch pad on my desk, next to the phone and doodle and draw while on the phone, write notes etc. and those books are wonderful and so expressive of who I was at that time. Anyway, I was up late the first night , and then the next morning before my shower a few minutes, and then today I got up early to add to it. Did you know that 7 am finger painting is really fun! So far, I am painting and papering over the old pages, not too much journaling. I may not really write much, and that is o.k. but it will be a place to doodle and make a mess, and hopefully have some fun.  Two of the pictures look over exposed... I actually whitewashed over the pages, and on the last pic. I added a white box for text later.
Today I am teaching at Zinnia- which I am really looking forward to. It is just such a welcoming place for creative folks and those who are trying to find or awaken that creativity within.Don't tell me you are not creative. You will get a lecture.  Hopefully I will have some pictures from class to share.
Happy Friday!!!

art journaling

I am not a huge youtube person. I hate to spend my time searching for stuff. I don't even know how I got there today, hmm?? Anyway, I found this - this girl is nutty but she is totally fun.  She talks about making art journals. I think I will continue on with her art journal tutorial. I hope you enjoy it!

(I seems that youtube and typepad don't play well together.... I can't post the video here.... I did post it at Zinnia though.... I learned something new today!!)

I should be sewing..

but instead I have been doing this! I have been having lots of fun putting  collage sheets together.  This one has the images sized for perfect fit to microscope slides. I asked some friends if they were to learn to solder, what would they want to do as a project, and they said make pendants. So, I have been making sheets for a class I hope to teach in the near future! But really, I gotta get back to sewing!

This piece done in wax, has been floating around  my  studio space for a  few months. Finally finished off the edges and placed a hook! I can't  really call it encaustic as I didn't paint with the wax, but I did add just a touch of color with melted crayons! I love the buttery  look , and the surface has some wax bumps, that are so enticing. You are drawn to touch it.2ndfrontviewconfirmation_2

works in progress-

I wouldn't want ya to think I was just goofing off, so I will share some pictures of stuff in progress.. Still a little tweeking to be done, and some ironing, before framing.

A favor...

A friend asked me to a favor, a simple one, and now I am asking you...
It seems the breast cancer site is not getting enough hits to actually be able to donate free
mammograms to those who need them. It is free- please go and click. That is all you have to do.
You will also notice that page has a link to the hunger site as well as some other very worthy causes. And , please tell your friends. It helps- it really does. Thanks!

O.k. - I got a handle on it now! Sometimes when you let the word "should" rule your life, it doesn't go so well. I was trying so hard to be excited about a job prospect that wasn't a good fit for me right now, and it was literally making me sick.
On to happier news- I got into Artfest2008!! Now this scares me too, but there is also loads of excitement and anticipation  involved too.  I am really looking forward to this experience!

A question-

O.k. I have never used my blog to take a poll for my personal life, but I have a question for you all ( yes, all 4 of you). I'd really appreciate some input. I just got home from a job interview and I really want to take a nap. Is that a bad sign?? I am thinking of taking this new job, part time. The thing is, I think I wish I didn't need to. Or is it just nerves? I don't know. I literally have heartburn just thinking about it. Maybe it is just change causing that uncomfortable feeling? Have any of you had that? Not being excited but kinda dreading  having to change your life. I don't want to let "them" down, but I don't know if I will be happy in the long run. ( I tend to look at everything in the long run- if there isn't a long run, I tend not to participate- )
Really- I want to hear from you...
Sincerely,
Confused and Heartburn in Pasadena

An adjective is an adjective-

I love to listen to NPR. O.k. so I don't always listen sometimes I just like voices when I am driving. Don't freak out- they keep me company. So, on this particular day the interview is about a motorcycle "club" that meets I think in Hollywood. The interviewer is talking with folks, "what do you ride? " kind of questions... Then he asked "What do you do?" an outspoken young mans says " We conjugate.."
I didn't hear too much after that- I give great credit to the interviewer for not missing a beat. Me, I was trying not to pee my pants while driving. I hate when that happens.
